The Amazing cow

What makes cows so amazing? Read on....

Cow's are ruminants. This means they have four stomachs. But you know that so we'll skip that part.

At birth the abomasum is the only stomach fully developed in the calf. An esophagus groove directs the milk to the abomasum by passing the rumen and reticulum. The other stomachs do not start functioning until the calf starts consuming roughage.

Bet you didn't know calves are born with pads on their hooves which protects their mother's birth canal during birth. These pads are easily scaped off as the little calf struggles to get up.

The adult cow encircles grass with her tongue and then cuts it off with her bottom teeth, she has no top teeth in front. She then swallows, later, at her leisure, she will "burp" up her cud and chew it with teeth set back in her jaw.

Heifer (female) calves born twin to a bull calf are what is called a "freemartin". 95% of these heifers are found to be sterile and are not kept for breeding purposes.

The tail is the cows mood barometer. Unlike the dog, a "wagging" tail does not make a happy cow. Not being milked in a timely fashion, dinner off schedule, calves bellowing, and flies are the major causes of crabby cows. Crabby cows generate crabby farmers.
